MIAMI - Newberry College infielder Ryan Cranmer has been selected by the Miami Marlins in the 24th round (707th overall pick) of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Cranmer - a native of Newport, N.C. - was named first team all-Southeast Region DAKTRONICS and second team all-Southeast Region by both the NCBWA and the ABCA, putting him on all three all-region teams.

He was recently named the first player in the program's history to earn first team all-South Atlantic Conference more than once. He was one of the top hitters in the conference, standing in a tie for third place in batting average (.376) and fourth in homeruns (10). His 47 runs scored ranked third in the league and he led the conference in total bases with 116. He was fifth in the conference with 68 hits and eighth in the league with 44 RBIs. He was also 12th in the conference with 11 stolen bases.

While Cranmer primarily played third base and shortstop at Newberry, the Marlins drafted the senior as a second baseman.

He is the 16th Newberry player picked in the MLB Draft since Johnny Harbin was picked in the first round of the 1972 Draft by the Dodgers. He is the first Newberry player drafted into the Marlins organization.
