MacLEAN, Va. - Newberry College senior catcher Chas Goodwin has been named Academic All-District III by the College Sports Information Directors of America and Capital One, as announced Wednesday.

Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) advances to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

Goodwin earns his second Academic All-District honor after also earning the accolade as a junior in 2013. He will graduate this Saturday with a 3.98 grade point average and a double major in chemistry with a biochemistry concentration and biology.

He was a preseason second team all-South Atlantic Conference selection in 2014 before suffering an injury which affected his throwing ability. He has also been named to Newberry College's Bachman Honor Society - which honors the top 10 percent of the graduating class each year - and Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.

Goodwin has been named to the Newberry College Dean's List in every season he has been enrolled and has also earned South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll distinction and the Division II Athletic Directors' Association Academic Award in each year eligible.

In 2012 he won the POLYED Award for Outstanding Achievement in Organic Chemistry. He is a member of the Blue Key Honor Society, Future Medical Professionals Association and the American Chemical Society. He was also a student assistant in Newberry's office of athletic communications for two seasons, serving as the lead statistician at the 2013 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Championship hosted by Newberry.

In his career, Goodwin hit .240 with 82 hits and 41 RBIs. He had a .363 on-base percentage thanks to 62 walks. He laid down 15 sacrifice hits and had a .989 career fielding percentage.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
