Wolves' season ends after 8-4 loss to Tusculum in SAC Tournament
Saturday, April 26, 2014

FOREST CITY, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves fell behind Tusculum early in the game and were unable to recover, dropping an 8-4 loss in an elimination game at the Food Lion SAC Tournament on Saturday.

Newberry sees its season end one game short of Championship Sunday with a 30-23 overall record.

The Wolves fell behind early, allowing the Pioneers to score three runs in the first inning. Mitchell Griffin (Columbia, S.C.) drove home a run in the second inning to cut the lead to two runs but Newberry left the bases loaded.

Newberry cut the lead to one run on an RBI single by Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) in the fifth inning before the Pioneers got that run back on a pair of wild pitches, making it 4-2.

The scarlet and gray struggled to score and Tusculum got the needed advantage with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth. A series of pinch hitters in the ninth allowed Newberry to score a pair of runs, but the tying run was left on deck with a long foul out.

No Wolves had multiple hits, as the scarlet and gray were out-hit 9-7 by the Pioneers. Zach Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.; 0-1) was tagged with the loss as he allowed three runs in the first inning. Jonathan Rosenberger (Anderson, S.C.) allowed two runs on three hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 6.1 innings of relief.
