Wednesday, April 16, 2014

AIKEN - The Newberry Wolves pounded out 13 hits and scored the game's last five runs in a 6-2 victory over the No. 16 USC Aiken Pacers at Roberto Hernandez Stadium on Wednesday night. The win was Newberry's first in Aiken since 2004.

Newberry enters this weekend's final regular season series at Anderson with a record of 26-21 after the split of the season series with the Pacers (30-11).

Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) and D.J. Martinez (Montpelier, Va.) each banged out three hits in the game, while Ryan Cranmer (Newport, N.C.) and JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) had a pair of hits apiece.

Freshman catcher Mitchell Griffin (Columbia, S.C.) drove in three runs and the Wolves needed only two pitchers in a mid-week game to push the Wolves' winning streak to six games.

Newberry took the lead in the fourth after Bradley hit a one-out triple, Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) walked and Griffin laid down a squeeze bunt to score Bradley and put the scarlet and gray up 1-0.

USC Aiken tied up the game in the bottom of the inning after a Ryan Metzler double, a wild pitch and Matt Bosse's sacrifice fly. The Pacers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from T.J. Costen.

Bradley led off the sixth with a double, moved to third on a groundout and tied up the game at 2-all on Griffin's RBI single to center. Newberry took the lead at 4-2 in the seventh on an RBI bases loaded walk by Goodwin, followed by Griffin bringing his third run of the game home when he reached on an error.

The Wolves' final two runs of the game came in the eighth, when Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly which was dropped and was doubled home by Baur.

Newberry pitching allowed only seven Pacers hits, with starter Zach Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.) allowing one run on three hits and two walks and a strikeout in a 4.0 inning start. Jonathan Rosenberger (Anderson, S.C.; 2-4) went 5.0 innings in relief to pick up the win after allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
