Wolves earn 8-5 extra inning win over Coker in series opener
Friday, April 11, 2014

HARTSVILLE - After the Coker Cobras rallied to tie the game up in the ninth inning and send it to extra innings, the Newberry Wolves put together a strong 10th inning to take a 8-5 win in the series opener at Tom J. New Field on Friday.

Newberry moves to 22-21 overall and 12-13 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Coker is now 20-18 overall and 10-14 in the league. The Wolves and Cobras will conclude the series with an important doubleheader at noon Saturday in Hartsville.

The game saw starting pitcher Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) in line to tie the school record for pitching wins in a season, as Newberry held a 5-4 lead when the junior left after 7.0 innings pitched, allowing four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in a no decision.

Newberry held that lead thanks to a two-out, bases loaded double by Jermale Paige (Walterboro, S.C.) to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. After conceding a run in the bottom of the inning, the Wolves tacked on another run with a long double by Ryan Cranmer (Newport, N.C.) plating Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.).

Coker scored twice in the bottom of the third, but Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) extended the lead to 5-3 when a run scored as he reached on an error. Coker cut the lead back down to one run on a two-out bloop single in the fifth, but the offense began to dry up from there.

The Wolves stranded five runners on base in the final five innings of regulation without scoring. A leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth set up Coker's path back into the game, and a strange dribbling ball eluded two Newberry infielders to tie the game up.

Newberry had no intentions of letting its hosts recover and earn a win. Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) led off the 10th inning with a single and moved to second on Paige's sacrifice bunt. Sheridan laid down a bunt single and stole second without a throw to put a pair of Wolves in scoring position for Baur, who ripped a two-run single up the middle. JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) laced a double down the right field line to score another run and give Newberry some breathing room.

Newberry reliever Daniel Nations (Central, S.C.; 4-2) allowed two baserunners on a single and a walk with two outs, but with the tying run at the plate, he induced a pop out to give the Wolves the victory. Nations allowed one unearned run on a hit and three walks with a pair of punchouts in 3.0 innings pitched.

Kirby was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two steals, while Paige had three hits with three RBIs and Baur had three hits with two RBIs. Cranmer, Sheridan and Mitchell Griffin (Columbia, S.C.) each had two hits. Newberry pounded out 16 hits in the contest to Coker's 10, with four of those going for doubles.

Newberry also kept the Cobras inactive on the basepaths, catching two runners stealing without conceding a steal to a team with a 51-steal lead in the conference standings in that category.
