Wolves cruise to 10-2 win over GRU Augusta
Tuesday, April 1, 2014

AUGUSTA, Ga. - A first inning homerun gave the Newberry Wolves a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the day, as the scarlet and gray cruised to a 10-2 win over the GRU Augusta Jaguars for the season sweep Tuesday.

Newberry is now 19-18 overall entering Wednesday's 6 p.m. '80s Night home game against No. 14 USC Aiken.

Ryan Cranmer (Newport, N.C.) put the Wolves up 2-0 as the second batter in the game with a two-run homer to left field. Newberry pushed the lead to 6-0 in the top of the fourth with a two-run single by Jermale Paige (Walterboro, S.C.), a run scoring on a wild pitch and a successful RBI squeeze bunt by Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.).

Augusta struggled to find offensive rhythm as the Wolves used nine different pitchers for an inning apiece. The Jags left the bases loaded in the second and didn't put a run across the plate until a double in the fourth to cut it to 6-1.

Newberry extended the lead in the seventh on a Cranmer RBI double and a Eric Barbieri (Marlton, N.J.) run-scoring single. GRUA scored again in the bottom of the seventh on a double to make it an 8-2 contest, but Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) laced an RBI triple to the gap in the eighth and Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) smoked a run-scoring single up the middle in the ninth to close out the rout.

The Wolves had runners on base in seven of the nine innings and were led at the plate by Cranmer's 2-for-4 day with three runs driven in. Paige was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of runs, while Barbieri also had a pair of knocks.

Wolves pitching combined to allow just five hits and five walks while striking out seven batters. Davis Funderburk (Columbia, S.C.), Marshall Rentz (Charleston, S.C.) and Zach Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.) were each perfect in their inning.
