GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Newberry baseball team pushed Tusculum to the edge in an extra innings loss in game one of a doubleheader before topping the Pioneers in the getaway game.
Freshman Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) drove in four RBIs on the day, while freshman Jake Nidiffer (Columbia, S.C.) earned a victory on the hill in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Wolves move to 16-12 overall and 8-7 in South Atlantic Conference play, while the Pioneers now sit at 16-10 overall and 7-7 in SAC action.
Newberry sees action on Tuesday in a non-conference tilt against the Pfeiffer Falcons, with a 6 p.m. scheduled first pitch at the Smith Road Complex.
Game One: Tusculum 7, Newberry 6 (10 inn.)
Newberry saw a 3-1 lead after four innings disappear as the Pioneers tied the game in the seventh, forcing the two sides to head into extra innings.
Senior Eric Barbieri (Marlton, N.J.) led off the fourth with a single, while sophomore JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) reached safely on a walk. After Barbieri reached third, a single by sophomore Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) would open the game's scoring as Barbieri scampered home. A sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third, where the baserunners would stay until a double by Kosch plated a pair of Newberry runs.
After Tusculum tied the game at 3-3, the 10th inning opened with a walk to junior Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.). A pair of wild pitches saw Baur reach second and third, while a walk saw Barbieri reach first. Bradley delivered a sacrifice fly to score Baur and push Barbieri to second. A double to right by sophomore Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.) scored Barbieri, followed by a single by Sheridan. With Schrenker on third, the Wolves would push across their final run on a ground out by sophomore Causey Stanland (Anderson, S.C.).
Tusculum would plate four in the bottom of the tenth to take a 7-6 game from the Wolves.
Game Two: Newberry 7, Tusculum 4 (7 inn.)
Nidiffer struck out four in five innings as he earned the second win of his career, before sophomore Daniel Nations (Central, S.C.) picked up a save in two innings of work.
The Wolves fell behind by two runs after one inning of play, but responded with three in the second as Bradley and Schrenker wrapped back-to-back singles. With two outs in the inning, a single to center by Kosch scored Bradley, while a single by senior Jermale Paige (Walterboro, S.C.) would score Schrenker and Kosch.
Two more Newberry runs came in the fourth as redshirt-freshman Trey Scott (Springhill, Fla.) singled up the middle, only to move to second on a sac bunt by Kosch. A walk to junior Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) allowed for Baur to double in a pair of runs for the Wolves' only runs of the frame.
The Wolves plated one run each in the sixth and seventh innings to push the scoreline to 7-4.
