Wolves drop series opener at Tusculum, 9-6
Friday, March 14, 2014

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Newberry Wolves took an early lead and pounded out 16 hits, but stranded 14 runners on base in a 9-6 series opening loss to the Tusculum Pioneers on Friday night.

Newberry is now 15-11 overall and 7-6 in South Atlantic Conference play and Tusculum is 15-9 and 6-6 in the league. The teams will meet for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Wolves took a 3-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Eric Barbieri (Marlton, N.J.) and a two-run double by Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.). Tusculum scored three runs in each the second and third inning to take a 6-3 lead.

Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) cut into the lead with an RBI double in the fourth and JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) smacked an RBI single in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-5.

A pair of two-out RBIs in the bottom of the seventh and an unearned run in the eighth by the Pioneers made the comeback tougher for the Wolves. Jermale Paige (Walterboro, S.C.) had an RBI single in the ninth, but the Wolves couldn't complete the comeback.

Paige, Kirby, Barbieri and Schrenker all had three hits apiece for the Wolves.

Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) was handed his first loss of the year to fall to 7-1, allowing eight runs - five earned - on 11 hits in 6.2 innings with four strikeouts, a walk and four hit batsmen.
