MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Newberry's Ryan Cranmer blasted a two-run homer on a day where he went 3-for-4, but the rest of the Wolves' offense was held in check in a 5-2 loss to the Pfeiffer Falcons at Joe Ferebee Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Newberry falls to 12-9 with the loss, while Pfeiffer is now 11-7. Newberry hosts Brevard in a South Atlantic Conference series this Friday and Saturday.
Cranmer (Newport, N.C.) accounted for three of the Wolves' seven hits on the day and put up the scarlet and gray's only runs of the day with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning.
Marshall Rentz (Charleston, S.C.) started on the mound for Newberry and was tagged with the loss after allowing three earned runs on four hits in 3.2 innings with a strikeout and no walks. Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) allowed two runs - one earned - on four hits, a walk and a strikeout in 2.0 innings of relief, while Daniel Nations (Central, S.C.) allowed just one hit and struck out three Falcons in 2.1 innings on the hill.
Pfeiffer took a lead in the second when Anthony Allende led off with a homer and added to that lead in the third with a sacrifice fly from Kevin Price. Dalton Lindley's RBI single in the fourth put the hosts up 3-0.
Cranmer pounded his third homer of the season in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Falcons responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to get back out to a 5-2 advantage.
The pitching staffs closed out the game on strong runs as Newberry managed just three baserunners in the final four innings and Pfeiffer only had two baserunners in its last three frames.
Eric Barbieri (Marlton, N.J.), JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.), D.J. Martinez (Montpelier, Va.) and Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) each had a hit apiece, with Kirby also swiping a stolen base.
