SALISBURY, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves fell behind Catawba early and couldn't fully execute the comeback in a 7-5 loss in the finale of a South Atlantic Conference series at Newman Park on Sunday.
Newberry falls to 9-6 overall and 4-5 in SAC play after taking only one game in the series. Catawba is now 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the league. The Wolves travel to Lander and host Limestone in the mid-week before hosting Lincoln (Pa.) for a Saturday doubleheader in Newberry's off week in the SAC scheduling rotation.
Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) continued his offensive onslaught, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, a double and his second homerun of the season. Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.) hit his first homer of the season, going 2-for-2.
The Wolves struck out 11 times at the plate, which made it tougher to come back from a 5-0 deficit after Catawba's T.J. Wharton hit a three-run homer with two outs in the third.
Baur's two run single with two outs in the fifth put Newberry's first runs on the board, but Wharton plated a Catawba run with a two-out single in the bottom of the frame to make it a 6-2 game.
Schrenker led off the seventh with his pinch hit homer to straightaway center field and Baur pulled his bomb to right field with one out in the frame, cutting the lead to one run.
Catawba got an insurance run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly. Schrenker led off the ninth with a single, but was rolled up in a double play. A game-ending strikeout left Baur's big bat on deck at the completion of the contest.
Jonathan Rosenberger (Anderson, S.C.) fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in 3.0 innings, including the big homer to Wharton.
Baur has now extended his conference lead in RBIs to 26 through only 15 games.
