Erskine's hot start dooms Wolves in first road game of the season
Tuesday, February 18, 2014

DUE WEST - The homestanding Erskine Flying Fleet jumped on the Newberry Wolves' pitching early and shut down the bats of the scarlet and gray, as Newberry lost its first road game of the season by a 14-1 count at Grier Field on Tuesday.

Newberry falls to 7-4 on the season with the loss and hosts GRU Augusta for a 4 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday. Erskine is now 4-1 on the year.

The Wolves only managed three hits in the contest, as Eric Barbieri (Marlton, N.J.) hit a double and JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.) each had singles.

Newberry did show solid plate discipline though, with six walks and two hit batsmen. However, the scarlet and gray stranded eight runners on base, as Jermale Paige (Walterboro, S.C.) hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to drive in the Wolves' sole run.

Erskine pounced on Newberry starter Will Robbins (Edgemoor, S.C.), who had previously had a strong season. Two homers in the first gave the Fleet a 3-0 lead after the initial inning and the home team plated seven runs in the second, including a three-run homer. Robbins fell to 1-1 on the season, allowing six runs in 1.1 innings pitched on six hits. Mike DeLee (Dorchester, S.C.) and Zach Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.) were the most effective relievers for the Wolves, but the staff combined to issue seven walks and allow six extra base hits, including three homers in the first two innings.
