NEWBERRY - Newberry starter Will Robbins (Edgemoor, S.C.) carried a perfect game through 6.2 innings as the Wolves staff combined for a one-hitter to take a 12-0 win over the visiting North Greenville Crusaders at the Smith Road Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Newberry moves to 4-0 to start the season and will open up South Atlantic Conference play at home this weekend, hosting 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Lincoln Memorial for a three-game series. The teams will play a single game at 6 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Robbins was dominant in his first start of the season, allowing no hits in 7.0 innings, walking only one and striking out 10 batters to take the SAC lead in that category early in the season. Jake Nidiffer (Columbia, S.C.) pitched a perfect inning of relief before Marshall Rentz (Charleston, S.C.) conceded the Crusaders' only hit of the game to lead off the ninth before shutting a potential rally down.
The Wolves' offense pounded out 16 hits in the contest. Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) reached base four times in the game, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a walk, while Eric Barbieri (Marlton, N.J.) was 3-for-5 with a two-run homerun.
Jermale Paige (Walterboro, S.C.), Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Robert Kosch (Clemson, S.C.) each had two hits, with Baur blasting a three-run double in the seventh inning.
