McLEAN, Va. - Newberry College's Chas Goodwin and Andy Vogel have been named 2013 Division II baseball Capital One Academic All-District as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.

Both student-athletes advance to the ballot for Academic All-America status, which will be announced May 30.

Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) earns Academic All-District honors for the second time in his career. He will graduate Saturday with a degree in business administration and had a 3.93 grade point average. He will be a four-time South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree and appear on the Newberry College Dean's List for all eight of his collegiate semesters. Vogel was a Presidential Academic Scholarship recipient, member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Beta Lambda honor societies, a student marshall and was inducted into the Bachman Honor Society, which honors the top 10 percent of the senior class at Newberry each year. A team captain this year, he helped lead the Wolves to their first winning season since 1999. He hit .248 with five doubles, one homerun and 18 RBIs in his senior year. For his career, Vogel was a .296 hitter with 151 starts, racking up 173 hits, 34 doubles, a triple and eight homers with 94 RBIs with a .963 fielding percentage.

Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) earns Academic All-District honors for the first time in his career. He has a 3.95 grade point average with a double major in chemistry (biochemistry concentration) and biology. He will be a three-time SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree and make his sixth appearance in six semesters on the Newberry College Dean's List. He is a member of the Blue Key honor society, American Chemical Society and won the POLYED (Polymer Education) award for academic achievement in organic chemistry. He was also a team captain this year, starting 34 games at catcher and hitting .283 with 15 RBIs and a .427 on-base percentage, thanks to 24 walks and eight sacrifice bunts. He ranked in the top 10 in the SAC with a .991 fielding percentage and had the highest percentage of runners thrown out attempting to steal in conference play. He is in the top 100 in the nation in walks and sacrifice hits.

Newberry's two honorees were the second most in District 3, which is the NCAA Division II Southeast Region (Conference Carolinas, Peach Belt Conference and South Atlantic Conference), with USC Aiken earning three honorees. No other schools in the region had more than one honoree. Also, no other schools from South Carolina in any division had more than one honoree as Coastal Carolina, Francis Marion, Presbyterian, South Carolina and USC Beaufort had one honoree apiece.

Student-athletes selected for Academic All-District honors must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. They must possess at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.00 scale). They must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
