Four Wolves named all-SAC

Four Wolves named all-SAC
Wednesday, April 17, 2013

ROCK HILL - The 2013 South Atlantic Conference baseball honors have been released by the conference office, with the Newberry Wolves earning four all-SAC picks, a Gold Glove and three SAC statistical champions.

The four all-conference pick is a new program record, as Newberry has never had more than two all-SAC selections in the same year until now. Ryan Cranmer (Newport, N.C.) at third base and Jonathan Rosenberger (Anderson, S.C.) at starting pitcher were named to the first team, pushing the scarlet and gray's all-time total to six. Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) at first base and Jermale Paige (Walterboro, S.C.) in the outfield were named to the second team. Baur also earned the Gold Glove at first base.

The Wolves won the team statistical championship for batting average (.323) and triples per game (0.277), while Baur's 1.11 RBIs per game earned him a SAC statistical championship.

Newberry's 27 total wins is the school's second-most since joining the SAC prior to the 1998 season, and the fourth place conference finish is tied for the school's best with the 1999 and 2007 seasons. The .323 batting average is a new school record in the Division II era and the team eclipsed the 500 total hit mark for the first time since 2003.

Cranmer is Newberry's first-ever first team all-SAC infielder and only the third all-SAC infielder, with two selected this season. The junior finished second in the league in on-base percentage (.465) and stolen bases (18) and third in the league in batting average (.376), homeruns (9), RBIs (47) and total bases (116). He was also in the top 10 in the conference in runs (fourth, 45), hits (fourth, 68), triples (sixth, 3), walks (sixth, 27) and doubles (eighth, 15).

Rosenberger is the third starting pitcher in program history to earn first team all-SAC honors after Brandon Petty in 2007 and Josh McElwee in 2012. The sophomore is the seventh starting pitcher at Newberry to earn all-SAC honors. Rosenberger has an 8-1 record with a 2.33 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 69.2 innings pitched this season. He has the third-most pitching victories in the conference and the fifth-best ERA. Seven of his victories came in SAC play, and SAC batters have a .226 average against him. He had scoreless starts against West Alabama and Lenoir-Rhyne and held Tusculum to one run in eight innings in the regular season meeting.

Baur earned all-SAC honors after a spectacular season in which he was twice named SAC Player of the Week. He earned the SAC statistical championship with 1.11 RBIs per game. He led the league in hits with 74 and RBIs with 52. He is second in the conference in doubles with 18 and total bases with 120, fourth in the league with a .612 slugging percentage, fifth in the conference with eight homeruns and sixth in the league with 44 runs. He earned Newberry's second-ever SAC Gold Glove with a .990 fielding percentage with only four errors in 383 chances and has been in on 32 double plays.

Paige is Newberry's first all-SAC outfielder in nine years after notching a .345 batting average with 50 hits, 33 runs scored, 14 RBIs and 11 steals. He had a .977 fielding percentage.

The Wolves will play Tusculum in their opening game of the Food Lion SAC Tournament at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at McNair Field in Forest City, N.C.
