Wolves complete series sweep of Brevard, 15-2 and 11-2

BREVARD, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves broke out the big bats Saturday, pounding out 27 hits to earn a series sweep of the Brevard Tornados with 15-2 and 11-2 wins at Gil Coan Field.

With the sweep, Newberry finishes the South Atlantic Conference season in fourth place with a 27-20 overall record and 13-12 conference record. Brevard concludes its season at 16-32 overall and 9-18 in the league. Food Lion South Atlantic Conference pairings will officially be announced later this weekend.

Game One: Newberry 15, Brevard 2
Four Wolves blasted homeruns to follow a strong start by Brandon Ahrens, ensuring a series win for the scarlet and gray.

Newberry scored the game's first nine runs and had 15 hits in the game. Eric Barbieri (Marlton, N.J.) was 3-for-4 in the game with four RBIs and two runs. The junior started the scoring in the top of the first with a three-run homer.

Ryan Cranmer (Newport, N.C.) drove in a run with a double in the second and scored when Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) hit a two-run homer to dead center to make it a 7-0 game.

JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) hit his first career homer to lead off the third, and Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored on a first-and-third double steal play to make it 9-0.

The Tornados plated a run on a Cody Queen single in the bottom of the third, but Newberry extended the lead when Cranmer scored on Barbieri single and Baur scored when Sheridan reached on an error to make it 11-1.

Anthony Siler (Longwood, Fla.) drove in a run in the seventh and Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) pushed the lead to 14-1 in the eighth with an opposite field pinch hit two-run homer.

Baur's RBI single in the ninth wrapped up the Wolves' scoring and John Slade's solo homer to lead of the bottom of the ninth was one of only three Brevard hits in the final six innings.

Ahrens (Newberry, S.C.) moved to 4-3 on the year, allowing one run in five innings on five hits, striking out two and walking one.

Siler, Cranmer, Baur, Bradley and Jermale Paige (Walterboro, S.C.) all had two hits apiece.

 

Game Two: Newberry 11, Brevard 2
The Wolves broke the game open with a five-run second inning and cruised to the series sweep.

Paige started the scoring with an BRI single and a pair of walks loaded the bases. Siler hit a run-scoring single and Cranmer brought home a run when he was hit by a pitch. Barbieri continued his red hot weekend with a two-run single as the Wolves sent 11 men to the plate in the inning.

Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) extended the lead to 6-0 in the fifth with an RBI groundout before BC cut into the lead with a pair of RBI groundouts in the bottom of the inning.

Cranmer doubled to lead off the sixth and scored on a Baur single and the scoring parade continued with a Sheridan sacrifice fly and a Paige run-scoring single up the middle to make it 9-2.

Cranmer's two-run opposite field homer in the top of the seventh finished Newberry's scoring.

Newberry's pitching was rock solid in the game, as Cole Cromer (North Augusta, S.C.) allowed no runs on four hits and a walk in 4.0 innings to move to 4-2 on the year. Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) allowed a pair of runs in 2.0 innings on no hits and Matt Chapman (Summerville, S.C.) closed out the game with a scoreless inning. Brevard had only four hits in the game.

Cranmer was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs, reaching base four times in the game. Paige was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Barbieri had two hits and Kirby scored twice.
