NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves fell behind and threatened to come back on multiple occasions before dropping a 10-5 decision to the Coker Cobras in their 2013 home finale at the Smith Road Complex on Monday night.
Newberry falls to 24-20 on the season, while Coker is now 24-11. The Wolves close out the regular season this weekend with a South Atlantic Conference series at Brevard. Newberry and the Tornados are scheduled for a 3 p.m. single game Friday followed by a noon doubleheader Saturday at BC's Gil Coan Field.
Newberry used nine pitchers in Monday's contest, with Mario Rojas (Miami, Fla.), Evan Brown (Columbia, S.C.), Daniel Nations (Central, S.C.), Matt Jolly (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) and Dell Lever (Newberry, S.C.) each recording scoreless innings.
Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Eric Barbieri (Marlton, N.J.) each had two doubles and drove in two runs, while Ryan Cranmer (Newport, N.C.) was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two steals. Cranmer is now 17-for-17 on steals this season, giving him the second-most steals in the conference and the most without being caught.
Newberry fell behind 6-0 after three innings. Wolves starter Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) fell to 2-3 on the year despite giving up only two runs on three softly hit balls in the second inning.
Back-to-back RBI doubles by Baur and Barbieri in the fourth cut the lead to 6-2 and another run-scoring double from Barbieri in the fifth made it a 6-3 game. Baur's second RBI double of the game in the seventh cut the lead to 6-4.
The Cobras scored four runs in the eighth to extend the lead and Newberry was only able to scratch out one more run for the final 10-5 scoreline.
The Wolves stranded nine baserunners in the game, with seven of those in scoring position. The tying run came to the plate in the fourth and seventh innings.
