NEWBERRY - In a pair of closely fought South Atlantic Conference games at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday, it was the visiting Anderson Trojans who made the most of the day taking an 8-7 win in the opener and an extra inning 4-2 win in the nightcap over the Newberry Wolves.

Newberry is now 21-17 overall and 9-10 in the SAC. The Wolves travel to Pfeiffer for a Tuesday 2 p.m. game before returning home for a 6 p.m. Wednesday game against Benedict. The Wolves' final home SAC series will take place on Friday and Saturday against Carson-Newman. Anderson is now 12-27 overall and 6-15 in league play.

Game One: Anderson 8, Newberry 7
Homeruns from Ryan Cranmer (Newport, N.C.) and Eric Barbieri (Marlton, N.J.) were not enough, as a failed pickoff attempt in the eighth inning allowed Anderson to even the series up.

Newberry started the game on fire, with Cranmer crushing a monster homerun to straightaway centerfield and Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) scoring on an error to make it a 3-0 Wolves lead after the first inning.

Anderson cut into the lead on a Chris Ayers RBI single in the second and took lead in the fourth with four runs.

The Wolves tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on Barbieri's solo homer to left and a Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.) RBI single to make it 5-all. Cranmer was hit by a pitch in the fifth, stole second and the Trojans threw the ball away twice in the ensuing play to give the Wolves a 6-5 lead.

AU regained the lead on a two-run dropped fly in the sixth inning to make it 7-6, then Newberry tied it at 7-all in the bottom of the inning on an RBI sacrifice bunt by Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.). From there, Newberry stranded six baserunners in the final three innings, with four of those in scoring position.

Two Trojan singles and an error on an attempted pickoff brought home the winning run in the eighth.

Barbieri was 4-for-5 in the game as the only Newberry player with multiple hits. Alex Roberts (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) fell to 2-4 with the loss. Only four of Anderson's eight runs were earned.

Game Two: Anderson 4, Newberry 2 (8 innings)
Two base hits in the eighth inning gave the Trojans the series win in a game where both offenses struggled to get rallies going.

JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) hit a double in the second inning, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to get the Wolves out to a 1-0 lead. Newberry extended its lead to 2-0 on Camp's RBI double in the fourth.

Anderson scored a pair in the fifth on a two-run Stephen McKnight single to tie the game, but Will Robbins (Edgemoor, S.C.) came in from the bullpen and induced a double play on his first pitch to snuff out the rally. Anderson only had two more baserunners in regulation, but Newberry could not get the offense going either, stranding a runner on second in the sixth.

Anderson got the win in the extra inning after a walk and two base hits scored two runs. Newberry went down in order to drop the series.

Camp was 2-for-3 in the game with a double and a triple, as Newberry managed only four hits. Matthew Jolly (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) was tagged with the loss to fall to 0-1.
