ROCK HILL - Newberry College sophomore Albert Baur has been named the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Baur - a native of Philadelphia, Pa., and graduate of Neumann-Goretti HS - is Newberry's second SAC Player of the Week in the last two weeks. Prior to Bradley Nichols' honor last week, Newberry had not had a SAC Player of the Week since the last week of the 2005 season.
Baur hit .609 last week with multi-hit performances in five of the Wolves' six games. He had 14 hits, nine RBIs, four doubles and a triple. He was also perfect in the field, which was especially impressive considering he was moved from first base to third base for the first time this season during the Augusta State game on Wednesday.
He is currently on a nine-game hitting streak and has multiple hits in 14 of Newberry's 33 games so far. He is the only player to start in all of Newberry's games this year. For the year he has a .370 batting average with 51 hits, 12 doubles, 31 RBIs and 29 runs scored. His three homers are tied for second most on the team and he has a .551 slugging percentage, with a .401 on-base percentage. He has a .990 fielding percentage in 286 chances with only three errors.
Baur ranks in the top five in the South Atlantic Conference this season with 138 at bats (2nd), 51 hits (3rd), 12 doubles (4th), 76 total bases (4th) and 31 RBIs (5th). He is in the top 10 in the league with 29 runs (6th), a .370 batting average (6th) and two triples (8th).
