NEWBERRY - A pair of Newberry errors led to four unearned runs for No. 5 Lander, as the visiting Bearcats emerged from the Smith Road Complex with a 7-4 win over the host Wolves on Wednesday night.
Newberry falls to 14-11 on the season entering a South Atlantic Conference series at Lincoln Memorial on Friday and Saturday, while Lander is now 18-4 and travels to Augusta State this weekend.
After allowing a run to Lander in the top of the first on a Connor Lewis two-out RBI double, Newberry took the lead in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring single by Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Eric Barbieri's (Marlton, N.J.) RBI groundout.
Newberry left two runners in scoring position in the second and Wolves' starter Brandon Ahrens (Newberry, S.C.) allowed only one baserunner in the second, third and fourth innings. A walk, error and single in the fifth loaded the bases for the Bearcats and Chris Hyatt's two-run single up the middle with a full count gave the guests a 3-2 lead. Lander stretched the lead to 5-2 in the sixth after a dropped fly ball led to RBI singles on unearned runs from Colby Painter and Aaron Poole.
The Wolves rallied in the bottom of the sixth after Ryan Cranmer (Newport, N.C.) led off with a bunt single and stole second. Baur ripped an infield single to first baseman Lewis, who threw the ball away for his first error of the season to allow Cranmer to score and cut the lead to 5-3. Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) drove in a run with a single to left to cut the lead to one run and a single by Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) and a walk drawn by Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.) loaded the bases, but the Lander pitcher got a strikeout to snuff the rally.
The Bearcats' Lewis hit a two-run double with two outs in the top of the ninth tho extend the lead, and Newberry could only get one runner on base in the final three innings to allow Lander to sweep the season series.
Goodwin was 2-for-4 in the game with a double, while Baur also had two hits. Ahrens fell to 3-1 on the mound after allowing three runs - only one earned - in 4.2 innings on four hits. Tyler Broome (2-0) got the win for Lander, allowing two unearned runs in 1.2 innings of relief, while Jeremy Jansen got his first save of the season with two strikeouts and a walk in the bottom of the ninth.
