ROCK HILL - Newberry College sophomore Alex Roberts has been named the South Atlantic Conference's Pitcher of the Week as announced by conference officials Tuesday morning.
The sophomore from Myrtle Beach helped get the Wolves' sweep of then-fourth ranked Catawba off to a rousing start with a brilliant performance on the mound. He went 7.0 innings and gave up only three hits and an unearned run while recording a career-high 10 strikeouts.
For the season, Roberts has a 2-1 record with a 1.88 earned run average with opposing batters hitting .248 against him. He leads the conference with 28.2 innings pitched in four starts with a complete game in the win at Mars Hill. His 24 strikeouts on the year are the fourth most in the league, and the Wolves are the only team in the conference without a league loss through the first two series of the year.
Roberts and the Wolves host Augusta State at 5 p.m. Wednesday and travel to Wingate for a SAC series with a 6 p.m. single game Friday and a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday. Roberts is scheduled to start the first game of the series.
