GREENWOOD - Despite leading the No. 8 team in the nation for most of the game, the Newberry Wolves came out on the losing end of a 12-10 extra inning decision to Lander at Dolny Stadium on Wednesday evening. Lander's Colby Painter hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th to give the Bearcats the win.

Newberry falls to 7-6 on the season and hosts No. 4 Catawba in a three-game South Atlantic Conference series the weekend. The Wolves and Indians will meet for a single game at 6 p.m. Friday, with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday. Lander pushes its record to 9-2 and hosts Young Harris in Peach Belt Conference action this weekend. Newberry and Lander will meet again on Wednesday, March 13, at Newberry's Smith Road Complex.

Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) got things started off right for the Wolves with a two-run homerun to right field in the top of the first, but Lander's Erik Lunde tied it up with a nearly identical homer in the bottom of the first to make it 2-2.

Jermale Paige (Walterboro, S.C.) led off the second with a single and was plated by Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.), who scored on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Siler (Longwood, Fla.) to make it 4-2. Lander cut one run off the lead in the fourth when Chris Hyatt scored on an error.

The Wolves extended their lead in the fifth with back-to-back RBI singles to left from Ryan Cranmer (Newport, N.C.) and Baur to make it 6-3. Goodwin scored on a wild pitch in the sixth and Nolan Schrenker (Valrico, Fla.) came home on Wesley Camp's (Pelion, S.C.) fielder's choice to extend the advantage for the scarlet and gray to 8-3.

The Bearcats started their comeback in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single by Lunde to make it 8-5. Newberry got an RBI single from Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) in the top of the seventh to make it 9-5, but Lander loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth. Lunde grounded into a double play, but the runner from third scored and Patrick Grady hit a two-out RBI double to narrow Newberry's advantage to 9-8.

Newberry manufactured a two-out run in the top of the ninth when Paige walked and stole second. Sheridan drove him in with a single, but was thrown out trying to extend it into a double, leaving the Wolves' lead at 10-8. Lander loaded the base again in the bottom of the ninth and tied the game on a two-run single by Austin Dunn. The Bearcats had three men on with one out, but the Wolves got a force out at home and a fly out to extend the game into the extra inning.

Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) led off the 10th with a pinch hit single, but was caught stealing and the Wolves ended the inning with a runner on first. Weston Lawing reached on an error for Lander with one out and Painter's homerun put an end to the game with the celebration going to the home team.

Camp was Newberry's starting pitcher and allowed two earned runs in 6.0 innings on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Matt Chapman (Summerville, S.C.) was tagged with the loss and fell to 0-1 after allowing unearned run in relief.

Baur was 2-for-5 with three RBIs while Schrenker was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Sheridan had two hits and two RBIs, while Cranmer, Paige and Goodwin all collected two hits each.
