Gaine's walkoff single in 12th gives Wolves four-game sweep of West Alabama

NEWBERRY - Matt Gaine (Goshen, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to center in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Newberry Wolves a 7-6 win over the West Alabama Tigers and complete a four-game series sweep at the Smith Road Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Newberry is now 4-0 on the year, with West Alabama falling to 0-4. Newberry plays at Coker at 3 p.m. Tuesday and at No. 7 Francis Marion at 3 p.m. Wednesday before heading to No. 3 Mount Olive for a three-game series next Saturday and Sunday.

The game was a pitcher's duel early until Newberry put up the first run in the bottom of the fourth. Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) led off with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout and brought home on an RBI single by Anthony Siler (Longwood, Fla.) to make it 1-0.

The Tigers took the lead in the fifth on an RBI double by Mitch Holgate, a two-run double by Chris Kilpatrick and an RBI single by Joel Murphy. A run scored from first on an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt in the top of the fifth to give UWA a 5-1 lead in the middle of that frame.

The Wolves came back to cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run pinch hit double by D.J. Roberts (Chapin, S.C.) and an RBI bunt single from Siler to cut the lead to 5-4.

UWA added a run in the eighth when Joel Murphy was walked, advanced to second on a passed ball, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a wild pitch to make the Wolves' comeback prospects harder.

After a 1-2-3 eighth inning, the Wolves scratched acrss two runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Roberts reached on second on an error with one out and a Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) walk put the tying run on base. Siler was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Ryan Cranmer (Newport, N.C.) drew a walk to plate one. Camp scored on a wild pitch to extend the game.

Both teams had chances to score in the 10th and 11th, but the Wolves capitalized. Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) led off the 12th with a single, moved to second on a JoJo Bradley (Spartanburg, S.C.) walk and scored the game winning run on Gaine's hard-hit single to center.

Baur was 2-for-5 in the game, while Roberts and Siler each had two RBIs. Cole Cromer (North Augusta, S.C.) moved his record to 1-0 on the season pitching a scoreless frame in the top of the 12th.
