Brazell's bombs boost Wolves to 10-6 upset of No. 1 Mt. Olive on Senior Day
Sunday, May 6, 2012

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Every senior wants to have a stellar game on Senior Day, but few can top the three homeruns and seven RBIs of Caleb Brazell (Blythewood, S.C.), as he led the Newberry Wolves to a 10-6 upset victory over No. 1-ranked Mount Olive at the Smith Road Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Brazell had only nine hits and four RBIs in his career entering Sunday's game, but hit homers on three straight at bats. The Wolves are now 20-29 on the season and Mount Olive is 42-8. The teams will meet up for a noon doubleheader Monday.

Neither team could muster any offense until a Newberry rally in the bottom of the third. A Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) groundout brought home the first run followed by an RBI single from Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.). Brazell then deposited his first homer of the day into the pond beyond the left field fence for a 4-0 lead.

The Trojans came back to tie the game on a Jermaine Berry RBI single in the fourth, a Jacob Rogers RBI single in the fifth and Geno Escalante's two-run triple later that inning to make it 4-4.

Scaggs reached on a bunt single in the bottom of the fifth and with two outs, Brazell gave the Wolves the lead for good on a two-run shot to left-center. Matt Gaine (Goshen, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch from third in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-4.

Brazell's dramatic day came to a close in the bottom of the seventh, as he blasted a three-run opposite field shot off of the right field scoreboard to make it 10-4.

The Trojans were not done, as Cameron Sherrer hit an RBI groundout in the eighth and Geno Escalanta blasted a homerun to left in the ninth, but baserunning errors and solid Newberry defense allowed the Wolves to earn the upset.

Prior to the game, Newberry's 10 seniors - Brazell, Wilbur Caldwell (Newberry, S.C.), John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.), Gravely, Jeremy Long (Clover, S.C.), Hunter Porter (Ballentine, S.C.), Wade Ruff (Rock Hill, S.C.), Scaggs, Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) and Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) - were honored. The seniors notched 12 of Newberry's 14 hits in the game, including the first career base hit for Porter.
