Wolves open SAC series with 5-1 win at Carson-Newman
Friday, April 13, 2012

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry Wolves got one step closer to next week's Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament with a 5-1 win over the Carson-Newman Eagles at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex on Friday afternoon.

Newberry moves to 19-25 overall and 12-13 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Carson-Newman falls to 22-23 overall and 11-14 in league play. The two teams will close out the series with a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday.

Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) got things started quickly for the Wolves, and he blasted the game's second pitch over the wall in right-center field for his fourth homerun of the season to give the Wolves the early 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) extended the Wolves' lead to 3-0 with a two-run double. C-N scored on a successful double steal in the bottom of the fourth, but that was the only run the Eagles could manage on the day against a solid performance from a trio of Wolves pitchers.

A Scaggs RBI double and a Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) run-scoring single in the top of the sixth closed out the scoring.

Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) moved to 5-2 on the season, allowing one run on three hits in six innings, striking out eight and walking two. McElwee's strikeout count is now up to 88 for the season and 309 for his career. Jeremy Long (Clover, S.C.) struck out five and walked two in two innings of hitless relief and Matt Chapman (Summerville, S.C.) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close the door.

Scaggs was the only player in the game with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs on his two doubles. Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) walked twice and went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
