Wolves take 6-2 win over Falcons
Wednesday, April 11, 2012

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves followed an excellent start from freshman Wesley Camp and three RBIs from second baseman Hunter Cox to cruise to a 6-2 win over the Pfeiffer Falcons at Joe Ferebee Field on Wednesday.

Newberry moves to 18-25 overall on the season and will close out South Atlantic Conference play this Friday and Saturday at Carson-Newman. With one win in the three-game series, Newberry will clinch a spot in next week's Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament.

Camp (Pelion, S.C.) was extremely efficient on the mound as he moved to 2-4 on the season. He went seven scoreless innings, allowing one unearned run in his final inning of work and seeing just one batter over the minimum through six innings.

The Wolves opened the scoring in the second inning after back-to-back singles from Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) and DJ Roberts (Chapin, S.C.). Baur scored when Cox (Andrews, S.C.) reached on an error to make it a 1-0 lead.

Cox added on to the lead with a two-out, two-run double in the fourth to plate Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) and Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) to up the lead to 3-0. Newberry's lead was extended to 5-0 in the sixth on a Sheridan RBI double and a Cox RBI groundout.

Pfeiffer scratched its first run across on a bases loaded fielders' choice in the seventh and made it a 5-2 game in the eighth when Jacob Yates scored from third on a wild pitch.

Baur plated Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) on an error in the top of the ninth to close out the scoring and Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.) came in the bottom of the ninth inning and induced a ground ball and a lineout double play following a walk to slam the door and give the Wolves the win.

Baur, McElwee and Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) each collected two hits in the game, while Cox drove in three runs. The Newberry staff struck out seven Falcons and walked only four, with the defense turning three double plays behind them.
