Josh McElwee named to Tino Martinez Award watch list

OMAHA, Neb. - Newberry College senior pitcher Josh McElwee has been added to the watch list for the 2012 Tino Martinez Award as announced by the College Baseball Lineup website this weekend.

The "Tino" Award is awarded annually to the most oustanding player in Division II college baseball. The annual honor is named after the former University of Tampa Spartan, Olympian and MLB All-Star, Tino Martinez.

Nominations for the award were made by baseball sports information contacts and media members.

Semifinalists are scheduled to be announced on May 7 with the finalists to be named on May 21.

After the finalists are named fans will be once again be invited to vote online at to help determine the winner. The winner will be announced after the conclusion of the Division II Baseball Championship held in Cary, N.C., from May 26 to June 2.

McElwee has battled injury throughout his career after stellar seasons as a freshman and sophomore, but has returned to form in his senior season. On Friday, April 6, McElwee recorded his 300th career strikeout.

McElwee currently ranks third in the nation in Division II with 80 strikeouts and has a 4-2 record with a 3.32 ERA in 62.1 innings pitched. Entering this weekend's regular season finale series at Carson-Newman, the senior has 301 career strikeouts with a 16-10 record, a 3.69 ERA in 246.2 innings pitched with an opponents' batting average of .252.
