Wolves take both ends of doubleheader at Anderson to earn series win
Saturday, April 7, 2012

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves' starters were fantastic Saturday, as Mario Rojas and Alex Roberts led the scarlet and gray to a pair of wins over the Anderson Trojans at Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Newberry followed eight shutout innings from Rojas to a 5-2 win in the first game, while Roberts went the distance on the way to a 2-1 win in the second game.

Newberry is now 18-24 overall on the season and 11-13 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Anderson is 13-32 overall and 6-18 in the league. Newberry plays at Pfeiffer on Wednesday afternoon before closing the regular season with a three-game SAC series at Carson-Newman on Friday and Saturday. One win in that series will clinch the Wolves' spot in the 2012 Food Lion SAC Tournament.

Game One: Newberry 5, Anderson 2
Rojas (Miami, Fla.; 5-3) allowed no runs in eight innings on four hits with four strikeouts, and Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.) picked up his seventh save of the season, while Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) reached safely in all five of his plate appearances to lead the Wolves to the win in the first game of the twinbill.

Baur started the scoring in the fourth inning when his RBI single drove in Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.), who had led off the frame with a double down the right-field line.

Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) drove in two runs in the fifth when Anderson was unable to cleanly play a high pop-up in the shallow outfield. Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) led off the sixth with a double and back-to-back two-out RBI singles from Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) and Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) made it a 5-0 game.

Only three Trojans reached scoring position on Rojas' watch, with all stranded short of their goal. In the ninth, a pair of Tanner Petrey (West Columbia, S.C.) walks were converted into the only Anderson runs of the game on Brett Cash's two-run single, but Sturkie came into the game and allowed one hit and induced a pop-out to center to close out the game.

Baur was 3-for-3 and drew a pair of walks to help the Wolves' offense along. Vogel and Rufus were each 2-for-5, while Scaggs was 2-for-3 with a walk.

Game Two: Newberry 2, Anderson 1
A pair of Newberry unearned runs with two out in the top of the seventh handed the Wolves the rubber game win after a fantastic pitching performance from Roberts (Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 3-3).

The freshman allowed one run on four hits and struck out six for his second complete game of the season. His only run allowed was on a Ryan Kirkland RBI single in the second inning, and Roberts allowed only two more baserunners the rest of the day, with one picked off after reaching on an error and the stranded at third in the sixth.

Anderson starter Erick Sanderson was equally impressive until the seventh, as he allowed two unearned runs on two hits with five strikeouts. Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Camp managed the two hits.

Camp's single led off the top of the seventh inning. He advanced to second on an error and went to third on a groundout. Baur was intentionally walked and after a Scaggs fly out to get the Wolves down to their final out, Petrey pinch ran and stole second. Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.) drew a walk to load the bases. Sheridan reached on a fielder's choice, but what should have been the third out was thrown away, allowing two runs to score.

Roberts struck the first batter of the bottom of the seventh out and induced a lineout and a foul out to win the game for the Wolves.
