Late comeback hands No. 3 USC Aiken 5-3 win over Newberry Wolves
Wednesday, April 4, 2012

AIKEN, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves jumped out to an early three-run lead, but three runs in the bottom of the eighth by No. 3 USC Aiken gave the Pacers a 5-3 win at Roberto Hernandez Stadium on Wednesday night.

Newberry falls to 15-24 on the season entering this weekend's South Atlantic Conference series at Anderson. The teams will start the three-game set with a single game at 6 p.m. Friday followed by a Saturday 1 p.m. doubleheader at Memorial Stadium in Anderson.

The Wolves started the scoring in the second inning after Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.) led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After an Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) single, a groundout from Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) plated Gravely to give Newberry a 1-0 lead.

Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) walked, Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) singled and Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) walked to lead off the third and load the bases. Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) brought home a run with a fielder's choice. Another Gravely walk re-loaded the bases and Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) brought home a run with a groundout to push Newberry's lead to 3-0 after three innings.

Newberry starter Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.; 1-4) kept the Pacers at bay for most of the game, as the home team stranded five runners and hit into two double plays in the first seven innings. Will Tankersley's two-out RBI double in the fourth cut the lead to 3-1 and his RBI groundout in the sixth narrowed the hosts' deficit to one run.

After the Wolves' early surge, the Pacer bullpen kept Newberry's scoring chances at a minimum, with the scarlet and gray stranding four runners on base with only two reaching scoring position in the final six innings.

Tankersley tied the game with an RBI single to right with one out in the bottom of the eighth and Bill Gerstenslager's sacrifice fly gave USCA the lead. The Pacers' insurance run came on Ty Barkell's RBI single. Newberry was retired in order to give the nation's No. 3 squad the win.

Kirby went 2-for-4 in the game while Baur reached base twice. Camp went 7.2 innings and allowed five runs on 11 hits, striking out four and walking only one.
