Wolves fall to No. 17 Pirates in rain-shortened game, 7-2
Tuesday, April 3, 2012

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The home team is supposed to get its last chance at the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Mother Nature had other plans as the Newberry Wolves fell 7-2 to the No. 17 Armstrong Pirates in a game called due to storm conditions with two outs in the top of the ninth.

Newberry falls to 15-23 on the season while Armstrong is now 24-9. The Wolves travel to No. 3 USC Aiken for a 6:30 p.m. game Wednesday.

Armstrong started the game off with a bang as Zach Taylor and Drew Walker each smashed two-run homeruns to right field to get the Pirates out to a 4-0 lead.

Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) and Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) led off with walks and would come around to score on a wild pitch and an Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) groundout. Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.) roped a triple to right-center but was stranded at third to make it a 4-2 game after one inning.

Armstrong's Casey Maoley hit a solo homer to the pond beyond the left field fence in the top of the second to make it 5-2 before both pitching staffs calmed down.

The Wolves' starter Jonathan Rosenberger (Anderson, S.C.) and reliever Wade Ruff (Rock Hill, S.C.) allowed only one more Pirate to reach base before the seventh inning, when a leadoff walk was converted to a run to extend the lead to 6-2. A walk and a pair of errors in the eighth stretched the lead to 7-2.

Newberry was not without its chances though, as six runners were stranded in scoring position before Mother Nature called it a night. Aside from Gravely's triple, Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) and Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) also had doubles while Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) and Baur also had hits.
