Saturday, March 31, 2012

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves and Lenoir-Rhyne Bears created great drama in Saturday's South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with a pair of one-run games at the Smith Road Comples. L-R held off a late Newberry rally to claim a 7-6 win in the first game and the Wolves responded with a 7-6 win on Edmund Gravely's walkoff single in the nightcap.

Newberry wins the series two games to one and now stands at 15-22 overall and 9-12 in conference play with six league games remaining. The Wolves host Armstrong at 6 p.m. Tuesday for the final home game before the conference tournament and visit USC Aiken on Wednesday night. Next weekend's SAC series is at Anderson on Friday and Saturday.

Game One: Lenoir-Rhyne 7, Newberry 6
The visiting Bears scored two runs in the top of the ninth and held off a Newberry rally as the Wolves scored three in the bottom of the inning but stranded the tying run at third base.

It was Newberry who jumped out to the lead in the second inning as Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) led off the frame with a double and came home on Josh McElwee's (Andrews, S.C.) single through the right side to make it 1-0.

Lenoir-Rhyne took the lead for the first time in the series in the top of the third as Colton Hansley and Rai Robinson hit back-to-back RBI doubles with two outs to give the Bears a 2-1 advantage. A Mike Gasque RBI single in the top of the fourth pushed the lead to 3-1.

Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) brought a run back in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out RBI single after a McElwee double, but L-R's Dalton Hall responded in the top of the fifth with an RBI single to make it 4-2.

Sheridan led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and came home on Kevin Rufus' (Andrews, S.C.) RBI single to cut the lead down to 4-3.

L-R pushed further ahead in the eighth on Ivan Vieitez' RBI single and the Bears tacked on two more in the top of the ninth on RBI singles from Hall and Gasque to make it 7-3 with just three outs to go.

The Wolves would not go away quietly though in the ninth. With one out, Sheridan, Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) and DJ Roberts (Chapin, S.C.) all hit singles to load the bases. A Rufus two-run double and a Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) RBI groundout cut the L-R lead to 7-6 with two outs and a runner on third, but Newberry could not bring the tying run home.

Rufus was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Cox and Sheridan were each 3-for-4 in the game.

L-R's Jared Carroll (4-3) earned the win allwoing three runs on 10 hits in seven innings, with Blaked Edmonson (3) getting the save, allowing three runs on five hits in two innings.

The Wolves claimed the nightcap and series win with a heartwarming and dramatic win as senior Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.) earned his first hit of the season with a bases loaded walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

L-R looked as if it would cruise early, notching four runs in the first inning on a Robinson two-run triple and a Luke Baynham two-run single.

The Wolves were held off the board until the bottom of the third when Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) roped an RBI double and was brought home by a Cox RBI single to narrow the deficit to 4-2. The Bears' Mike Mastroberti led off the fourth with a triple and came home on a Baynham single to make it 5-2.

Newberry tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth. Scaggs led off with a single, Cox hit a double and Rufus was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Vogel's single drove in two runs and Baur tied the game with an RBI groundout.

Gasque would give L-R the lead at 6-5 in the top of the sixth with a two-out RBI triple before the Wolves made their great comeback in the bottom of the seventh.

Cox and Rufus led off the inning with singles and a Camp bunt single brought home a run with a close play at the plate to tie the game. A sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third and an intentional walk issued to Baur loaded the bases. With the count full and one out, pinch hitter Gravely smoked a hard hit past the third baseman and brought home the winning run to set off the celebration.

Reliever Matt Chapman (Summerville, S.C.; 2-0) earned the win after allowing no runs in the top of the seventh. Starter Alex Roberts (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) allowed six runs on seven hits in six innings.
