Seventh inning rally leads Wolves to 5-3 win over Lenoir-Rhyne
Friday, March 30, 2012

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Josh McElwee pitched a complete game and a seventh inning rally led the Newberry Wolves to a 5-3 win over Lenoir-Rhyne in the first game of the Lutheran rivals' three-game series at the Smith Road Complex on Friday evening.

With the win, Newberry is now 14-21 overall and 8-11 in South Atlantic Conference play and Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 9-27 and 5-14 in the league. The teams are scheduled for a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Newberry jumped on the Bears early scoring three runs in the first inning. Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) drove in the first run with a double down the right field line and Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) brought a run home with a sacrifice fly. A Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) single brought the score to 3-0.

McElwee (Andrews, S.C.; 4-1) worked around jams in the first and second innings and cruised through the third and fourth. L-R tied the game at 3-all in the fifth on an Ivan Vieitez RBI single and a Colton Hansley two-run double.

The defending SAC Pitcher of the Week allowed only two more baserunners to give the offense the chance to earn the victory.

The Wolves did just that in the bottom of the seventh. Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) and Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) led off the inning with consecutive singles with a Kirby steal putting runners on the corners with none out. A Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) sacrifice bunt was perfectly placed and allowed Kirby to score the game-winning run. Vogel brough Goodwin home with an RBI double to tack on the insurance run.

McElwee struck out five of the Bears' last seven batters to shut the door and give the Wolves the early win. The game was completed in just one hour and 55 minutes.

Baur and Vogel each notched two hits for Newberry. McElwee scattered six hits, struck out 10 and walked two in his first complete game since May 2, 2009. The 10 strikeouts are his third double-digit total of the season and runs his season total to 68 and career total to 289.
