Erskine takes 8-7 walkoff win from Wolves in 10th inning
Wednesday, March 28, 2012

DUE WEST, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves baseball team came back from a late deficit to force extra innings, but Erskine's Josh Purvis hit his second homerun of the game to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning and give the homestanding Flying Fleet an 8-7 walkoff victory at Grier Field on Wednesday.

With the loss, the Wolves fall to 13-21 on the season entering a South Atlantic Conference series against Lenoir-Rhyne this weekend. The series starts with a 6 p.m. game Friday followed by a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday with all games played at Newberry's Smith Road Complex.

Newberry vastly out-hit the Flying Fleet by a 14-8 margin but stranded 11 runners on base in the game. Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) and Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) each had three hits while Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) drove in three runs.

Rufus started the game off with a bang, as he led off the top of the first with a solo homer to right field to give Newberry the early 1-0 lead. The Wolves would hold that lead until the fourth inning when EC's Chase Corn drove in a run with a single to tie the game.

The Wolves retook the lead in the fifth on an RBI double by Vogel followed by a Baur RBI single. Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) and Vogel each hit RBI singles in the sixth to put Newberry up by a 5-1 margin.

Erskine narrowed the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth on a pair of RBI groundouts. The Fleet then took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run homer by Purvis and a two-run double by Phillip Herring.

Vogel singled to lead off the top of the ninth and Baur's second homer of the week tied the game up at 7-all. One Fleet runner reached on an error in the bottom of the ninth, but the Wolves got the next three Erskine batters out to head to extra innings. Unfortunately for Newberry, they stranded two runners on base in the top of the 10th and Purvis led off the bottom of the frame with a homer to end the game.
