Wolves drop 5-1 decision at No. 17 Armstrong
Tuesday, March 27, 2012

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Newberry College redshirt freshman Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) hit his first collegiate homerun, but Armstrong's Zach Taylor hit a grand slam to hand the No. 17 Pirates a 5-1 win at Pirate Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Newberry falls to 13-20 on the season while Armstrong is now 21-8. The Wolves are back on the road Wednesday to take on the Erskine Flying Fleet at Grier Field in Due West for a 2:30 start. Newberry returns home for a South Atlantic Conference series with Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday and Saturday.

Newberry starter Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.; 1-3) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but Taylor's grand slam in that inning put the Pirates on the board. Camp would last seven innings, allowing five runs on six hits.

The Wolves struggled early but threatened in the fifth, sixth and seventh. However, the scarlet and gray left a runner on third in the fifth and left the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh.

Baur led off the eighth with his homerun to right field, but the Wolves could not get another runner on base to try and cut into the Pirates' deficit.

Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) went 2-for-3 in the game and Tanner Petrey (West Columbia, S.C.) was perfect in one inning of relief.

The Wolves and Pirates will meet in a rematch next Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Newberry
