Wolves split Saturday twinbill with Lincoln Memorial
Saturday, March 24, 2012

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves and Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters split their Saturday South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at the Smith Road Complex, with the Wolves taking a 10-2 victory in the first game and the Railsplitters taking a 3-2 weather delayed win in the second.

Newberry won the series two games to one and moves to 13-19 overall and 7-11 in league play. LMU is now 15-21 overall and 8-10 in the conference. Newberry plays at Armstrong in Savannah, Ga., on Tuesday afternoon and at Erskine on Wednesday afternoon before returning home to host Lenoir-Rhyne in a SAC series next Friday and Saturday.

Game One: Newberry 10, Lincoln Memorial 2
The Wolves jumped out to an early lead and steadily built on to it, while a strong pitching performance kept the Railsplitters at bay as Newberry claimed the series win.

Mario Rojas (Miami, Fla.) moved to 4-2 on the season, allowing two runs on just two hits in 6.1 innings. DJ Hearsey (Oviedo, Fla.), Evan Brown (Columbia, S.C.) and Tanner Petrey (West Columbia, S.C.) combined for 2.2 innings of relief without allowing a hit or a run.

Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) drove in three runs on a 2-for-5 day, while Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) were each 3-for-5. Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and reached base safely in all five playoff appearance.

Vogel and Baur drove in runs in the first inning to stake the Wolves out to an early 2-0 lead, and the duo paired up for another run in the third when Baur drove Vogel in after his leadoff double.

LMU scored its first run of the series when Curt Fuqua led off the fourth with a solo homerun to left, but Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single to make it a 4-1 Newberry lead.

Walks, hit batters and wild pitches allowed LMU to score once in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-2, but an RBI single from Baur and a run-scoring groundout by Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) in the bottom of the inning extended the lead to 6-2.

Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) made it 7-2 in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly and the Wolves capped the scoring with three runs in the eighth including a sacrifice fly from Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) and Sheridan's RBI single.

Newberry's defense turned four double plays in the game.

Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 3, Newberry 2
The visiting Railsplitters narrowly avoided the series sweep behind a complete game effort from Brandon Cowan.

No offense was going before the 1:39 weather delay, but the Wolves jumped on the board when a run crossed on a fielder's choice and an RBI double from Cox to make it 2-0.

LMU scratched one run back in the fourth on an RBI single from Gelson Perez. The Railsplitters took the lead in the top of the sixth when Brandon Morris and John Saylor hit back-to-back two-out RBI singles.

Newberry stranded two runners in scoring position, but Cowan struck out eight Wolves - all of which came after the weather delay.

Alex Roberts (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) allowed only one baserunner in two innings in his start, but the lengthy delay removed him from the game. Jonathan Rosenberger (Anderson, S.C.) allowed three runs on six hits in 3.2 innings and was stuck with the loss.

Baur and McElwee were each 2-for-3 in the game.
