NEWBERRY, S.C. - A dominant pitching performance from Josh McElwee and a strong night at the plate led the Newberry Wolves to a 12-0 win over the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters in the South Atlantic Conference series opener at the Smith Road Complex on Friday night.

Newberry moves to 12-18 overall and 6-10 in SAC play, while LMU is now 14-20 overall and 7-9 in the league. The two teams will meet up for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday to wrap up the three-game series.

McElwee (Andrews, S.C.; 3-1) struck out 11 Railsplitters in eight innings, scattering six hits - only two of which left the infield - and issuing only two walks. Only two LMU baserunners reached scoring position all night.

Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) was the offensive star for the Wolves, going 3-for-5 with five RBIs. Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) hit a two-run homerun to right field in the seventh inning and reached base safely in all five of his plate appearances. He also had a single, was hit by a pitch three times, stole one base and scored four times.

Vogel's RBI single in the first started the scoring and an RBI fielder's choice from Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) made it 2-0 after one inning. Vogel's two-run single in the fourth inning pushed the lead to 4-0.

The Wolves put the game out of reach for good in the sixth inning with another two-run single from Vogel, an RBI single from Baur and a two-run single by Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) to make it 9-0.

The scoring was capped in the seventh on an RBI single from Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) and Rufus' two-run bomb to right. Goodwin finished the night 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
