NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves followed Chas Goodwin's 3-for-3 night with two RBIs to a 7-6 upset win over the No. 10 nationally ranked USC Aiken Pacers at the Smith Road Complex on Wednesday evening.
Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) capped his night with the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning, while Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.) earned the save for the second straight night. Note: Sturkie was incorrectly omitted from the statistics of Tuesday's win at Augusta State. Those statistics have been corrected.
Newberry moves to 11-18 overall on the season entering this weekend's South Atlantic Conference series with Lincoln Memorial. The series at the Smith Road Complex begins with a 6 p.m. game Friday and concludes with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Pacers started the scoring in the top of the first with a pair of unearned runs, but Newberry tied it up in the bottom of the inning with its own pair of unearned runs, including an RBI single by Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.).
Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) led off the bottom of the second with a double and bunt singles by Goodwin and Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) got the Wolves' rally going. Rufus' single drove in a run and Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) reached on an error. Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and a first-and-third play plated the third run of the inning before the final out was recorded to put Newberry up 5-2.
Aiken narrowed the deficit on Will Tankersley's solo homerun in the fourth inning and an RBI single by Josh Miller in the fifth before a Goodwin RBI single in the sixth put the lead at 6-4. The Pacers tied the game in the seventh inning on Stephen Carmon's RBI single and his run on a first-and-third double steal attempt.
Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) got the eighth inning going with a one-out single and it looked like a rally might be tough, but Cox's fly ball to left field was dropped to put runners on second and third. Goodwin's RBI single put the Wolves back on top 7-6.
USCA led the ninth inning off with a walk, but Sturkie sat three batters down in order to close out his second straight game with a save.
Goodwin's 3-for-3 effort led the offense, while Cox also earned two hits. Matt Chapman (Summerville, S.C.) earned his first collegiate win by not allowing a run in 1.2 innings of relief with just one hit and two strikeouts.
