Wolves fall in extra innings to No. 12 Tusculum, 7-6
Friday, March 16, 2012

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - It was another late Friday night for the Newberry College baseball team, as the Wolves found themselves on the losing end of a 7-6 decision in 10 innings to the No. 12 Tusculum Pioneers.

Newberry falls to 9-16 overall and 5-8 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Tusculum is now 21-5 and 11-2 in the league. The teams will close out the series with a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Pioneer Park.

The Wolves started the scoring with a big third inning, putting five runs on the board. With the bases loaded, Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) hit into a fielder's choice to plate Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) followed up with a two-run triple by Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.). Rufus scored when Albert Baur (Phildelphia, Pa.) reached on an error, and Brandan Sheridan's (Jacksonville, Fla.) RBI single put the Wolves up 5-0.

Tusculum brought two runs back in the bottom of the fourth on a leadoff homer by Alexi Colon and an RBI double by Nate Reid.

Sheridan's second RBI single of the game in the top of the fifth put Newberry's lead at 6-2. Colon hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to narrow that advantage to 6-4.

Weather rolled through the area around 7:30, delaying the game for two hours going into the top of the sixth. TC's Colon led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk, stole second and was able to score on two wild pitches. A throwing error with two out and a runner on third allowed the Pioneers to tie the game at 6-all.

Newberry stranded a runner in scoring position in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings, but also forced the Pioneers to strand runners in the eighth and ninth.

But in the bottom of the 10th, the Wolves gave up an unearned run when a fielding error allowed Aaron Guinn to score from first after his infield single.

Rufus went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Sheridan was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Newberry starter Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) earned no decision for the second straight start after allowing four runs after scattering eight hits through five innings, striking out three. Jonathan Rosenberger (Anderson, S.C.; 1-2) was the tough luck losing pitcher after allowing the unearned run without the ball leaving the infield.
