Wolves, Bulldogs split doubleheader
Saturday, March 10, 2012

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with South Atlantic Conference foe Wingate, winning game one 10-9 and dropping game two 4-2.

The Wolves fall to 9-14 overall and 5-7 in the SAC. Newberry wraps up a five-game homestand on Wednesday at 6 p.m. when Lander Bearcats travel to the Smith Road Complex.

Game One: Newberry 10, Wingate 9
Newberry exploded for back-to-back four run innings in the second and third innings to add what looked like plenty of run support for starting pitcher Mario Rojas (Miami, Fla.), who finished the game with four strike outs and three earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched.

After Rojas gave up a two-run homer in the top of the first, neither team scored until Newberry put up four runs in the bottom of the third after two straight one out walks resulted in a RBI single to left center by first baseman Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.). The Wolves plated a second run with two outs on a single through the right side by second baseman Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.). McElwee scored on a throwing error by Wingate's Justin Nygard, before Vogel scored as shortstop Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) found himself in a rundown between first and second base.

After a Wingate run in the fourth, Newberry tacked on four more in the bottom of the frame. Catcher Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) opened the inning by getting hit by a pitch, which was followed by a bunt single by right fielder Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.). As Kirby reached safely and Goodwin scampered down to second, the throw to first skipped by the covering second baseman, allowing Goodwin to score and Kirby to advance to third.

Kirby scored on a sac fly to right by senior Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.), while third baseman Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) would soon advance to second on a wild pitch. Following a McElwee walk, designated hitter Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) singled to right center plating Scaggs. After a pitching change by the Bulldogs, Vogel reached on a fielding error, allowing McElwee to score the final run of the inning.

The fifth inning saw Newberry tack two final runs on the board, as back-to-back walks followed by a wild pitch placed runners on second and third. A hit batter loaded the bases for the Wolves allowing Rufus to pick up a RBI on a bases loaded walk, which was followed by McElwee reaching on an error allowing left fielder Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) to score the Wolves 10th run of the game.

Wingate battled in the sixth adding a two runs, but the Bulldogs did the most damage in the eighth where Wingate was able to post a four run inning, before the Wolves were able to shut the m down in the ninth to secure a 10-9 victory.

Game Two: Wingate 4, Newberry 2
Freshman pitcher Alex Roberts (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) threw seven innings and struck out two in a tough 4-2 loss to Wingate in game two.

Rufus led the Wolves at the plate in the second game with a 2-3 evening.

Wingate scored a single run in the second, and added a second in the fifth on a solo homer by James Tedder to right field. In the bottom of the sixth, Newberry tied the game as Camp singled through the left side and advanced to second on a single up the middle by Scaggs. A bunt single by Rufus loaded the bases allowing Camp to score the following at-bat as McElwee grounded in to a fielder's choice. Scaggs would score a batter later on a single through the left side by Baur.

The Bulldogs plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to escape Newberry with a 4-2 victory.
