Late miscues lead to Wolves' 6-4 loss to Pfeiffer
Wednesday, March 7, 2012

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves came back from a two-run deficit to tie the game in the seventh inning, but miscues in the eighth and ninth inning allowed the Pfeiffer Falcons to escape from the Smith Road Complex with a 6-4 non-conference win on Wednesday evening.

Newberry falls to 8-12 on the season, while the Falcons are now 12-8. The Wolves host Wingate at the Smith Road Complex on Friday and Saturday for a three-game South Atlantic Conference series.

The Falcons opened the scoring in the first on Jon Gray's RBI double, but the Wolves took the lead in the bottom of the frame on an RBI groundout by Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) and a run-scoring double by Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) to make it 2-1.

Pfeiffer had no truly explosive innings, but tied the game on an unearned run in the second and was aided by a wild pitch on the way to taking the lead in the fifth. The wild pitch also moved a runner along on the way to one run in the sixth as PU took a 4-2 advantage.

Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to bring a run back and Zach Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.) hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 4-all.

Pfeiffer's Preston Lyon hit a two-out single in the eighth and advanced all the way around the bases on a trio of wild pitches to give the Falcons a 5-4 lead. The lead was extended to 6-4 in the ninth when Gray reached on an error, stole second and went to third on a throwing error on the steal. Newberry's seventh wild pitch of the night brought him home.

Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but a double play ended Newberry's comeback hopes.

Vogel was 2-for-2 with a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a hit by pitch on the night. Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) was 2-for-5. On the mound, Tanner Petrey (West Columbia; 0-2) was hit with the loss after allowing the winning runner on base despite allowing just two hits in 2.2 innings.
