Wolves drop series opener at No. 23 Catawba, 13-5
Friday, March 2, 2012

SALISBURY, N.C. - Newberry errors turned in to five unearned Catawba runs, giving the Wolves little shot as the host Indians took a 13-5 win in the opener of the South Atlantic Conference series at Newman Park on Friday.

Newberry falls to 8-9 overall and 4-3 in the SAC and No. 23 Catawba is now 11-4 overall and 6-1 in the league. The teams will close out the series with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.

Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) put the Wolves up 1-0 in the top of the first inning with a one-out solo homerun down the left field line. It was Scaggs' first homer of the season and only the Wolves' second of the year.

Catawba tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the second when Greg Lawson hit an RBI single following the Wolves' first of six errors on the evening.

The hosts took the lead in the third after Ryan Bostian led off the inning with a homerun and tacked on two more in the inning on a double steal and an RBI single.

The Wolves loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth and cut the lead to 4-2 on a Matt Gaine (Goshen, N.Y.) sacrifice fly, but a runner was caught stealing and a deep fly for the third out stopped the rally. Julio Zubillaga extended Catawba's lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homer to left.

Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) drove in a run on a single in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-3. However, the game got out of Newberry's reach when Catawba scored four runs in the bottom of the inning after four Newberry errors. Things got worse in the bottom of the eighth as Catawba scored three more times to push the lead to 13-3.

The Wolves showed life in the ninth though, with John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.), Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) and Scaggs hitting three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) drove in a run when he was hit by a pitch and Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) hit a one-out RBI single to make it 13-5, but two strikeouts and a lineout ended the game.

Starting pitcher Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) fell to 2-1 on the season with his first loss of the season, allowing 10 runs - only six earned - on nine hits in 4.2 innings, striking out six. He also went 3-for-5 at the plate.

Camp, Scaggs and Baur had two hits apiece. Catawba starter JJ Jankowski moved to 4-0 on the season, allowing three runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings and striking out 10 Wolves.
