Wolves take series finale over Mars Hill, 14-10
Sunday, February 26, 2012

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves pounded out 15 hits and scored runs in each of the first five innings on the way to a 14-10 win over the Mars Hill Lions in the finale of the South Atlantic Conference series at the Smith Road Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Newberry wins the SAC series two games to one and moves to 7-8 overall and 4-2 in league play. Mars Hill is now 4-11 overall and 2-4 in the league.

The Wolves opened the scoring with an Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first but fell behind in the second inning as Mars Hill scored five runs, extending the inning on Newberry errors before Wolves pitcher Alex Roberts (Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 2-1) executed a double pickoff to get out of the inning.

Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) narrowed the deficit to 5-2 in the second with an RBI single to left before Newberry exploded for eight runs in the third inning by batting around the order before Mars Hill could record an out.

Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) hit a two-run single, Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) and Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) each hit run-scoring singles to put Newberry ahead. After a pitching change, Brandan Sheridan (Jacksonville, Fla.) crushed a two-run triple and Goodwin hit an RBI double with Causey Stanland (Anderson, S.C.) later scoring on a wild pitch to give Newberry a 10-5 lead after the third.

Kirby and Sheridan scored in the fourth and Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) and Vogel were plated in the fifth to stake the Wolves out to an unassailable lead.

Mars Hill cut away at the lead with a run in the fourth, a run in the seventh and three runs in the eighth before preseason all-SAC closer Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.) snuffed out an eighth inning rally and kept the Lions off the board in the ninth and earned his third save of the season.

Scaggs was 3-for-4 in the game, while Baur, McElwee, Sheridan and Goodwin drove in two runs apiece. Roberts allowed six runs - only two earned - in five innings to earn the win.

Newberry returns to action on Tuesday, February 28, when the Wolves host Georgia College (9-6) for a 3 p.m. game. The Bobcats defeated the Wolves 4-1 in the two teams' first meeting this season.
