Wolves pound Augusta State, 11-1

NEWBERRY, S.C.- A five-run first inning and six scoreless pitching innings from Mario Rojas allowed the Newberry Wolves to coast to an 11-1 non-conference win over the visiting Augusta State Jaguars at the Smith Road Complex on Wednesday.

Newberry and ASU are both 5-7 on the season with the result. The Wolves host Mars Hill for a three-game South Atlantic Conference series this weekend. The series is tentatively scheduled to begin on Friday at 6 p.m., barring weather delays.

Rojas (Miami, Fla.) moved to 1-1 on the season, scattering four hits through his six scoreless innings, striking out three and walking only one. Newberry relief allowed only one run on three hits.

The Wolves' offense got off to fantastic start, with an Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) RBI double, a run-scoring single by Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) and a three-run triple by Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.). Goodwin's hit was knocked down into foul territory by the third baseman, but the sophomore catcher hustled around the bases while the ball was in no-man's-land to leg out the three-base hit.

The offense slowed down with the five-run lead until Zach Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.) smacked a sacrifice fly in the fourth to make it 6-0 and a two-run double in the fifth by Baur pushed it to 8-0.

A Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) sacrifice fly in the sixth made it a 9-0 lead before ASU notched its only run in the eighth on a Caleb Saggus sacrifice fly. Vogel hit a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth to cap the scoring at 11 runs before Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.) pitched a perfect ninth inning to close out the win.

Baur, Goodwin and Vogel each drove in three runs, with Vogel going 3-for-4 on the day. Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) extended a hitting streak to nine games with a first inning double.
