Bobcats' big inning downs Wolves, 4-1
Tuesday, February 21, 2012

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Newberry Wolves struggled at the plate and were following a strong pitching start by Alex Roberts before a four-run seventh inning by Georgia College gave the host Bobcats a 4-1 victory at John Kurtz Field on Tuesday.

Newberry falls to 4-7 on the season entering Wednesday's home game with the Augusta State Jaguars (5-6). First pitch at the Smith Road Complex is set for 3 p.m.

Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) got the Wolves on the board in the first inning with a leadoff walk and a steal. He advanced to third on a flyout and came home on a groundout by Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) to put Newberry up 1-0. Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) hit a double, but was stranded to end the inning.

Roberts (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) lasted six innings in his second start of the season and was very effective, scattering five hits and striking out five. He picked off three baserunners and stranded two Bobcats in scoring position.

However, Georgia College's staff was also effective, keeping the Wolves hitless from the beginning of the second inning until an Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) pinch hit single in the eighth.

The Bobcats got on the board against the Newberry bullpen in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game on a Matthew Robinson sacrifice fly and taking the lead on an RBI hit by pitch by Travis Echols. Cody Maas hit a two-run double to extend the lead.

A pinch hitting walk by Zach Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.) and Baur's single started a rally in the eighth, and a Camp single loaded the bases with none out. But a GC pitching change induced two strikeouts and a fielder's choice to thwart the Wolves' comeback attempts. Three Wolves struck out in the ninth to end the game.
