Wolves split twinbill with Brevard, take series two games to one

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry Wolves took the first game of a Saturday doubleheader from the Brevard Tornados 6-5 but lost the series finale to the guests by an 8-4 count at the Smith Road Complex.

The Wolves are now 4-6 overall and 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Brevard is 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the league. Newberry next visits Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga., on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before a four-game homestand begins against Augusta State at 3 p.m. Wednesday. The Wolves' next conference series is at home against Mars Hill on Friday and Saturday.

Game One: Newberry 6, Brevard 5
The Wolves battled back to tie the game in the seventh inning and scored a pair of runs on wild pitches in the eighth inning to claim the series win with a tight 6-5 win in the 9-inning game.

Newberry took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) led off with a walk and the Wolves loaded the bases with no outs when Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) and Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) were hit by pitches. Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) brought home Camp with a sacrifice fly to left, but a runner caught stealing and a groundout snuffed out the rally with Newberry holding on to just a 1-0 lead.

The Tornados tied the game in the second with a two-out RBI single by Chad Funkhouser and took a 3-1 lead after the third inning on sacrifice flies by Tarron Robinson and Kramer Clark.

Scaggs hit triples in the third and fifth innings, but Newberry could only convert one of those into a run, as Vogel cut the lead to 3-2 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

A Funkhouser RBI double for Brevard in the top of the sixth put the guests' lead back at two runs before a Wolves comeback.

The first three Wolves at the plate in the sixth loaded the bases before Newberry grounded into a double play which allowed Albert Baur (Philadelphia, Pa.) to score and cut the lead to 4-3. Another Vogel sacrifice fly tied the game at 4-all after seven innings.

Newberry took a 6-4 lead after the eighth inning without having to record a single hit. Wilbur Caldwell (Newberry, S.C.) drew a two-out walk before Camp was hit by a pitch and Scaggs was intentionally walked. Back-to-back wild pitches scored Wolves runs heading into the final inning.

Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.) recorded his second save of the season, but not without some drama. Funkhouser led off with a double and scored on an Eric Renegar single to cit the lead to a solitary run. A sacrifice bunt put Renegar in scoring position and a walk put the potential game-winning run on base, but Buar snagged a hard-hit ball at third and doubled Renegar off of the bag at second to end the game.

Scaggs was the only Newberry player with multiple hits in the game with the two triples, while Vogel had two RBIs on the sacrifice flies.

Game Two: Brevard 8, Newberry 4
Both teams had big innings thanks to opposition errors, but Brevard rallied in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to avoid the series sweep.

The Tornados put up three runs in the top of the first when a throw to complete a potential double play went awry to bring a runner home from second and Robinson hit a two-run single.

Newberry tied the game in the third when Scaggs hit a two-run single and he scampered to third when the left fielder could not control the grounder. Vogel reached on an error to plate Scaggs and tie the game at 3-all.

BC's Renegar hit a two-out, two-run double in the fourth to put the guests up 5-3 and a sacrifice fly and RBI sacrifice bunt by the Tornados in the fifth made it a 7-3 game. Newberry had runners thrown out on the basepaths in scoring position in each inning. A Randy O'Dell sacrifice fly in the sixth pushed the lead to 8-3.

Newberry attempted to rally and comeback in the seventh inning, but could only push across one run on a Vogel RBI groundout with the tying run on deck.
