Late comeback falls short as Wolves lose to Barton, 8-7

NEWBERRY, S.C. - A late comeback fell short as the Newberry Wolves lost their home opener to the Barton Bulldogs, 8-7, at the Smith Road Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

Newberry falls to 1-3 on the season entering Wednesday afternoon's game at No. 1 Francis Marion. First pitch at FMU's new Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium is set for 3 p.m.

Wesley Camp (Pelion, S.C.) earned two extra base hits, while Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) and Robby Scaggs (North Augusta, S.C.) each picked up two hits.

Camp got the scoring started in the bottom of the first, hitting a triple down the right field line and coming home on a sacrifice fly by Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) to make it a 1-0 game.

Barton's Avery Harper hit a two-run single in the second and the Bulldogs plated a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third to go up 4-1.

Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) led the bottom of the third off with a double and scored on a Camp double to make it a 4-2 game. Vogel walked to load the bases with one out, but Newberry grounded into a double play to end the threat. Neither team could score in the fourth or fifth, and a two-run single by Harper and an RBI single from Phillip Cotten stretched Barton's lead to 7-2.

The Wolves responded in the bottom of the sixth after Scaggs' leadoff double and walks by Hunter Cox (Andrews, S.C.) and Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.). Two runs scored when Goodwin reached on a fielder's choice and an errent throw trying to turn the double play allowed Cox to scamper home from second, making it a 7-4 game.

The Bulldogs picked up a free run in the seventh when Mitchell Wheeler reached second on a throwing error, went to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to extend the Barton advantage to 8-4.

Causey Stanland (Anderson, S.C.) earned a pinch hit walk, Alex Kirby (Chapin, S.C.) hit a pinch hit single to left-center and Zach Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out in the eighth. Stanland scored on a wild pitch, but Kirby and Morgan were stranded at second and third with the score at 8-5 in Barton's favor.

Vogel led the bottom of the ninth off with a double down the left field line, followed by Josh McElwee (Andrews, S.C.) and John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) earning walks to load the bases with no outs. Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.) and Morgan drew RBI walks, but a fly out would end the game with the bases full of Wolves.

Newberry loses its third straight game, all by one run. The Wolves stranded 10 runners in scoring position on the day.

Mario Rojas (Miami, Fla.) was hit with the loss in his first start of the season, allowing four runs - only two earned - on four hits in three innings. Newberry pitchers issued only one walk, while the Barton staff issued nine free passes. Brandon Warren moved to 1-0 on the season for BC with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, while Phillip Williams earned his second save of the year despite issuing four walks in just the ninth inning.
