FOREST CITY, N.C. - Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.) hit a two-run homerun over the 25-foot wall in left field to boost the sixth-seeded Newberry College Wolves to a 5-4 win over the fourth-seeded Tusculum College Pioneers in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament at McNair Field on Thursday evening.

The game was scoreless through four and a half innings before the Wolves started the offense in the bottom of the fifth. A single by Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) and a bunt single by Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) set the table. An RBI double by Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) and a two-run single by Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) put Newberry up, 3-0.

The Pioneers (31-16) answered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run single by Branfy Arias, and tied the game on an RBI groundout by Arias in the top of the eighth. Newberry Cole Robison (Greer, S.C.) was unable to earn a pitching decision despite a solid 7.1 innings of work, allowing three runs on 10 hits.

After Love led off the eighth with a single off of the upper portion of the left field wall, Vogel used his bat to make the ball clear that wall, giving the Wolves a 5-3 lead.

Closer Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.; 3-0) came in the game to get five outs, and allowed one run in the top of the ninth, but a fielder's choice and a groundout sent Newberry to the winner's bracket final.

Love was 2-for-3 in the game, while Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.) went 2-for-4. Gartman and Vogel had two RBIs apiece.

Friday's game and all Newberry SAC Tournament games will be broadcast live from McNair Field by Jimmie Coggins on WKDK-AM 1240 in Newberry County and online at www.WKDK.com. Live statistics are available at http://thesac.athleticsite.net/spring11.
