Wolves split Senior Day doubleheader with Anderson
Saturday, April 16, 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College Wolves took the first game of Saturday's doubleheader with Anderson, 15-4, but lost the nightcap, 9-8, at the Smith Road Complex.

With the split, Newberry completes the South Atlantic Conference schedule with a 15-12 league record, which places them sixth in the league. The Wolves (22-25 overall) will face off against top-seeded Catawba in the first round of the 2011 Food Lion SAC Tournament at noon Wednesday. The tournament will be held at McNair Field in Forest City, N.C.

Game One: Newberry 15, Anderson 4
The Wolves jumped out to a lead in the first inning and never looked back on the way to a 15-4 victory which clinched a series win.

After working out of a jam in the top of the inning, the Wolves scored four in the bottom of the first. Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) was hit by a pitch and John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) hit a single after that. An RBI single by Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.) put the first run on the board followed by an RBI bunt single by Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.), and agressive baserunning afterwards extended the lead.

Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) laid down a sacrifice bunt to score the runner from third, but while an Anderson infielder turned to argue a call, Vogel kept running from second and scored to make it 4-0 on that play.

In the second, an RBI single by Anderson's Brett Scarberry followed by a two-run homer by Bobby Roper cut the lead to 4-3. Newberry pushed the lead out to 5-3 in the third when Vogel hit a homerun just over the wall in left field.

While Newberry pitching kept the Trojans off the board, the offense continued to roll. Darr and Vogel led off the fifth with singles and an RBI single by Jovan Rohena (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico), a sacrifice fly by Patrick Regalado (Hialeah, Fla.) and an RBI double by Rufus made it 8-3. A Bley RBI single in the sixth pushed the lead to six runs.

The Wolves tacked on six runs in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Darr, an RBI double by Vogel, RBI singles from Regalado and Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) and a two-run double by Keke Wadsworth (Pomaria, S.C.) to make it 15-3.

The Trojans scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth, but could get no closer as the Wolves cruised to the win.

Chauncey Mattei (Greenville, S.C.; 3-4) pitched three innings of one-hit scoreless relief to earn the win. Darr and Vogel each went 4-for-5, while Wadsworth, Darr, Vogel, Bley and Regalado each had two RBIs.

Game Two: Anderson 9, Newberry 8
The Trojans broke a tie with three runs in the top of the seventh and a Newberry rally in the bottom of the seventh fell short as the Wolves just missed out on the fifth seed in the tournament.

AU's Ryan Saxson started the scoring with a first inning RBI single, but Rufus led off the bottom half with a triple and tied the game when he scored on a wild pitch. Anderson reclaimed the lead in the second with a sacrifice fly by Troy Ambros and an RBI single by Jonathan Romano to make it 3-1. Gray hit an RBI single in the bottom of the second and Love gave the Wolves a 4-3 lead in the third with a two-run homer into the pond behind the left field fence.

An unearned run in the top of the fourth for AU tied the game, but Fogarile and Love responded with RBI singles in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-4. However, Saxson and Erick Sanderson led off the fifth with back-to-back homers to tie the game again.

After a scoreless sixth, the Trojans unleashed three straight RBI singles with two out in the top of the seventh to make it 9-6.

Newberry was not going to lose easily though, as Love led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, followed by a pinch-hit single from Zach Upton (Clearwater, Fla.). A Vogel RBI single and RBI sacrifice bunt by Rohena brought Newberry within a run, and the winning run got on base with one out via a walk by Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.). Unfortunately, a flyout and a groundout left those runners stranded and gave AU the win.

Love was 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the nightcap, while Fogarile went 2-for-3. Nate Elder (Winter Springs, Fla.; 0-1) was hit with the loss after allowing the first runner of the ninth inning on base.
