Wolves clinch SAC Tournament berth with 6-1 win over Anderson in series opener
Friday, April 15, 2011

NEWBERRY, S.C.- Mario Rojas (Miami, Fla.) scattered six hits in a complete game effort and got all the run support he would need on solo homers from Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) and Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) as the Newberry Wolves clinched a berth in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Anderson Trojans on Friday evening.

Newberry (21-24, 13-12 SAC) will wrap up the series against Anderson (18-29, 9-16 SAC) with a doubleheader at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday. The start time of the Senior Day games has been pushed back to 4 p.m. to avoid the storms forecast for early Saturday.

Rojas (4-2) worked quickly and efficiently, striking out six and walking only two. The two walks issued were the only times Anderson batters had a three-ball count, as the free-swinging Trojans only forced the sophomore to throw 96 pitches in Newberry's first complete game since April 17, 2010, also in the last series of the season.

Rufus got the Wolves' offense going with a towering homer to right field to lead off the bottom of the first. Anderson pitcher TJ Estes - who also went the distance - didn't allow another Newberry player on base until Gartman's line drive homer to right field to lead off the fourth inning.

The Wolves pulled away with an excellent offensive effort in the fifth. John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.) led the frame off with hard-hit single to first base and moved to second on a base hit by Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.). A double by Terrence Gray (Newberry, S.C.) made it 3-0, and a squeeze bunt single by Rufus made it 4-0. A Gartman RBI double pushed the lead to 5-0 and an intentional walk to Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) loaded the bases. A wild pitch rounded out the Newberry scoring at 6-0.

The Trojans scratched across a run in the sixth on a single by Erick Sanderson. He moved to second on a wild pitch and reached third when Blake May reached on an error. A Rojas balk brought in the only blemish in the run column for the Wolves.

In the final three innings, Rojas issued two walks and a single, but no Trojan advanced past second base, as the quickly-played game ended in an hour and 40 minutes with the Wolves in the win column.

Rufus and Gartman each went 2-for-3 with a homer and 2 RBIs apiece.
