Wolves take Saturday doubleheader to earn series sweep of Lenoir-Rhyne
Saturday, April 9, 2011

HICKORY, N.C. - The Newberry College Wolves took both ends of Saturday's South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Lenoir-Rhyne to earn the series sweep. Newberry earned a 7-2 win in the first game and won the second game after a lengthy rain delay.

The Wolves (20-22, 12-12 SAC) return home to close out the regular season with five games next week. Newberry takes on Georgia College on Tuesday and Francis Marion on Wednesday before welcoming Anderson to the Smith Road Complex for a three-game SAC series on Friday and Saturday.

Game One: Newberry 7, Lenoir-Rhyne 2
The Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and starter Cole Robison (Greer, S.C.; 5-5) scattered four hits over eight innings as Newberry claimed the series victory.

The first three Wolves to come to the plate in the game all reached, with Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) hitting an RBI single. Love and Sanchez Gartman (Newberry, S.C.) each came home on a two-run single by Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.).

Lenoir-Rhyne's Dalton Hall scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 3-1, but a two-run single by Love in the fifth made it a 5-1 Newberry advantage. Vogel hit an RBI single in the seventh to push the lead to 6-1.

Robison was masterful and didn't allow another runner in scoring position when Stephen Andrews doubled, stole third and made it 6-2 when he scored on an RBI groundout by Dan Catalano. Gartman wrapped up the scoring with a two-out RBI double in the eighth. Robison was perfect in the eighth and reliever Wade Ruff (Rock Hill, S.C.) stranded two runners in the ninth to give Newberry the win.

Robison allowed two runs on four hits, striking out six and walking only one batter in 8.0 innings. Gartman was 3-for-4 in the game, while Love and Vogel each had two hits and three RBIs in the game.

Game Two: Newberry 4, Lenoir-Rhyne 3
The Wolves took the lead in the third inning and held off the Bears for the series sweep. It was Newberry's third one-run win in four games this week, with Tyler Sturkie (West Columbia, S.C.) earning his third save of the week.

Newberry once again scored first, this time in the second inning. Caleb Brazell (Blythewood, S.C.) led off the frame with a single to left and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt by the pitcher. He scored on an RBI groundout by Vogel. Lenoir-Rhyne took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by Ben Adams.

The Wolves took the lead for good in the third inning. Love hit an RBI single and would later score on a first-and-third play with Vogel to end the inning with the scarlet and gray ahead, 3-2.

Newberry took advantage of three Lenoir-Rhyne errors to push the lead to 4-2 in the sixth. Vogel reached on a two-out error and moved to third on a single by John Fogarile (New York, N.Y.). Vogel scored when Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio) reached on another error, but Fogarile was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. L-R cut the lead to 4-3 when Andrews scored on a two-out fielding error.

The Wolves threatened in the top of the seventh as a single by Patrick Regalado (Hialeah, Fla.), a double from Kevin Rufus (Andrews, S.C.) and an intentional walk issued to Love loaded the bases, but Brazell lined out to third to keep the score at 4-3.

Sturkie's run of late inning heroics continued, as he got a groundout to get out of the sixth inning. In the seventh, a runner got to second base on a throwing error and the sophomore hit the next batter and the bases were loaded on a single, but Sturkie induced a game-ending double play to get the save and give Newberry the series sweep.

DJ Hearsey (Oviedo, Fla.; 1-1) got the win with 2.2 innings of strong relief, allowing just one unearned run on one hit. Evan Brown (Columbia, S.C.) got the starting nod and allowed two runs on only two hits in 3.0 innings before being pulled from the game due to a lengthy rain delay. Sturkie allowed just one hit in 1.1 innings of work, getting his sixth save of the season and third this week.

Fogarile was the only Newberry player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3, with Rufus and Gartman hitting doubles.
