LMU takes third game of series from Wolves, 14-3
Sunday, April 3, 2011

HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Newberry College Wolves could not keep the offense going from Saturday as they fell to the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters, 14-3, in South Atlantic Conference action at Hennon Field.

The Wolves fall to 16-22 overall and 9-12 in SAC play. They continue a eight-game road trip Tuesday at nationally-ranked Georgia College before the weekend SAC series at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Newberry opened the scoring for the day in the top of the second inning, as freshman catcher Chas Goodwin (Greer, S.C.) hit an RBI single to score Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio), who had reached on a double.

Things went downhill for Newberry starting in the bottom of the second, as the Railsplitters scored nine runs in the next three innings. Five straight LMU hits followed by a Newberry error with one out allowed the hosts to score five runs in the second, and John Couch hit a solo homer to lead off the third. In the fourth, it was a two-run Juan Alvarez triple and a sacrifice fly by Cody Pack to make it a 9-1 game.

Newberry got back on the board in the top of the fifth, as Evan Darr (North Augusta, S.C.) hit a two-out, two-run single to cut the lead to 9-3. However, the Railsplitters responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 12-3. A pair of two-our RBI singles for LMU in the sixth wrapped up the scoring for the day.

Darr went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Wolves, while Bley went 2-for-4. Starting pitcher Cole Robison (Greer, S.C.; 4-7) was lit up for 12 earned runs on 13 hits in 4.2 innings. LMU starter Austin Johnson went 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits to earn the win. Joseph Horsley went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Alvarez was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
